Measurings: Pittsburgh Plan for Art, Pittsburgh PA, 1979
The installation of five indoor redwood and steel floor sculptures titled Measurings utilize the principles of composition that govern the Parallel arrangements from the outdoor site RePLACEment project.
Each floor sculpture is composed of two sets of redwood elements arranged in different formations. One set includes three redwood pieces of the same size and the second set includes two pieces of different size. The combined lengths of the three matching pieces is equal to that of the two dissimilar pieces. A steel right angle, with rays measuring five by five feet, rests squarely on the top plane of each redwood composition, which measurably shift in configuration.
The steel angles denote the material equilibrium between the parallel and perpendicular elements that form each redwood arrangement, and act as recurrent markers indicating each sculpture is identical in mass and weight. Titles of the individual sculptures signal measures and means of measurement, as they commingle on the expansive gallery floor.
