Janus: 1985-1988
Each painting in the series is a diptych; two same sized rectangular panels fastened together to form a square with a vertical cleft through the center where the edges of the rectangles join. The center cleft line partitions and scales segments and areas of linear and planar elements in contrasts of color, temperature variation, and surface treatment. As the series grew the metaphor of Janus, the ancient Roman deity of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages and endings, transitioned into the Divided Square series.
